Palate Expansion
It’s Not Just About Straight Teeth. It’s About Room to Breathe.
A narrow mouth often means a crowded airway. We use palate expansion to gently widen the dental arches, creating the necessary space for straight teeth, proper tongue posture, and a lifetime of better breathing.
Whether you are looking to guide a child’s early development or seeking a non-surgical solution as an adult, we customize this therapy for every stage of life.

Why We Expand “The Box,” Not Just the Lid
Imagine a shoe box. If the lid (the upper jaw) is widened but the box underneath (the lower jaw) remains narrow, the two won’t fit together properly.
Many traditional orthodontic approaches focus primarily on expanding the upper jaw. We expand both the upper and lower jaws to create balance, support long-term stability, and provide adequate space for the tongue.
- Stability: Expanding both arches helps the bite fit together more securely and reduces the likelihood of relapse.
- Tongue Space: A wider lower jaw allows the tongue to rest forward in the mouth, supporting healthier breathing patterns.
- Long-Term Outcomes: Expanding only the upper arch can leave the underlying structural imbalance unaddressed.
Palate Expansion for Children
Guiding Growth When It Matters Most
For children, the jawbone is not yet fused, making it adaptable. We use a Fixed Expander to gently widen the palate and lower arch.
How It Works:
- Placement: A custom-made device is bonded to the back teeth. It is hidden on the roof of the mouth and under the tongue.
- Activation: You will use a small key to turn the device at home. This applies gentle outward pressure.
- The Result: Over several months, new bone fills in the center, widening the jaw, improving nasal breathing, and making room for adult teeth.
Who Is It For?
- Kids with crossbites or narrow smiles.
- Mouth breathers or loud snorers.
- Children with crowded baby teeth (which predicts crowded adult teeth).

Palate Expansion for Adults
Yes, You Can Expand Without Surgery
For a long time, adults were told that once they stopped growing, their only option for expansion was jaw surgery. That is no longer true.
We use non-surgical, removable expanders for adults. These custom appliances look similar to retainers but are designed to apply light, steady force to stimulate remodeling in the jawbone.
The Benefits:
- Improves Sleep: Expanding the upper arch increases the size of the nasal cavity, making it easier to breathe through your nose.
- Restores Tongue Space: Provides room for the tongue to rest on the roof of the mouth, keeping the airway open at night.
- Aesthetics: Creates a broader, fuller smile and reduces dark corridors at the corners of the mouth.
What to Expect
Comfort
Mild Pressure
Most patients feel a “pushing” sensation in the roof of the mouth or along the nose, especially after adjusting the device. It is rarely painful.
Speech & Eating
Short Adaptation
You may have a slight lisp or difficulty swallowing for the first few days. Soft foods are recommended while your tongue adapts.
Timeline
Months, Not Years
Active expansion typically takes a few months, followed by a stabilization period to ensure the results last.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can adults really expand their jaws?
Yes. Modern research and thousands of successful cases prove that adult jaws can respond to expansion therapy without surgery. We use specialized removable appliances designed specifically for mature bone.
Does the expander hurt?
It is generally not painful. You may feel pressure in the roof of the mouth or along the nose/cheeks when the device is active, but it is rarely described as pain.
Will this fix my sleep apnea?
Expansion addresses the anatomical cause of many sleep issues—a small airway. By widening the nasal floor and creating room for the tongue, we can significantly reduce airway resistance and improve sleep quality.
