There are many signs and symptoms of sleep apnea, but the most important to recognize are listed below. Just because you have one of these symptoms doesn’t necessarily mean you suffer from sleep apnea. Check with your doctor to be certain. Symptoms of sleep apnea in adults include:

Know The Symptoms

Many people suffer from sleep apnea without even knowing it, which can lead to a shorter lifespan and other health complications. Sleep apnea should be taken seriously since so many people are suffering from it.

You might not realize that you aren’t getting quality sleep throughout the night, but this will take a toll on your body over time. Airway dentistry is designed to help you sleep better so that you can live a long, healthy life. Learn more about our treatment options for adults below.

Oral Appliance Therapy

There are a few different options for treating sleep apnea with airway orthodontics. It is important to note that there is not an end-all-be-all for sleep apnea. The Airway Dentists strive to improve the overall structure of your upper and lower jaws – therefore, helping you breathe better. Sleep apnea treatments will vary depending on the severity of your symptoms. We will walk you through each option to decide which is best for your needs.

Mandibular Advancement Devices

Invisalign® Treatment

CPAP

Treatment With Mandibular Advancement Devices

This alternative for oral appliance therapy is known as your “lifetime appliance” because it is non-invasive and has a greater compliance rate. By moving the jaw and tongue forward, the mandibular advancement device helps to alleviate any obstruction in the back of the throat. The jaw and tongue migrate further from the rear of the throat as they advance. This expands the upper airway, lowering the air resistance that causes snoring.

Invisalign® Treatment

In cases where a patient suffers from sleep apnea due to an orthodontics issue, we recommend treating their sleep disorder with Invisalign. Many times when you have a narrow bite or severely crowded teeth, your tongue does not have enough room it needs and will likely fall back and obstruct the airway while you sleep.

Treatment With CPAP

For patients with moderate to severe sleep apnea, a CPAP machine is advised. It uses a mask to give air pressure to your nose while you sleep. The pressure of a CPAP machine is higher than the ambient air, just enough to keep your upper airway passages open and avoid apneas and snoring.

Sleep Apnea Treatment Without CPAP

Sleep apnea can be treated at The Airway Dentists without the use of a CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machine. Many of our patients inform us that their CPAP disrupts their sleep rather than helping them sleep better, which is why we emphasize other forms of therapy such as mandibular advancement devices. A custom mouthguard/piece will be used to open your airway by repositioning your tongue and/or lower jaw.
