Metal-Free Crowns
Strong ceramic crowns without visible metal
When a tooth is broken, weak, or heavily restored, a ceramic crown can protect it when a filling is no longer enough. At The Airway Dentists, we use metal-free ceramic and porcelain materials chosen for strength, fit, and a natural-looking result at the gumline.
Why We Use Metal-Free Crowns
When a tooth needs more support, we want the restoration to do more than simply cover it. We choose metal-free ceramic and porcelain crowns for their natural appearance, tissue-friendly materials, and ability to support long-term function.
Natural-Looking Results
Ceramic materials can be shade-matched to blend with nearby teeth and avoid a dark line at the gumline.
Metal-Free Materials
For patients who prefer to avoid metal in the mouth, ceramic and porcelain offer a different restorative option.
Built for Function
Modern ceramics are selected based on the tooth location, bite forces, and long-term plan for the tooth.
When a Crown Makes Sense
A metal-free crown can be a good option when a tooth needs more protection, or when an older crown no longer fits your needs or preferences.
For a damaged tooth
A ceramic crown can help protect a tooth that is cracked, broken, heavily restored, or no longer strong enough for a filling alone.
For an older crown
If an older crown is wearing down, showing a dark edge, or standing out visually, replacing it with a metal-free crown may improve both function and appearance.
HOW IT WORKS
What the Crown Process Looks Like
Preparation
We prepare the tooth by removing only the damaged structure and shaping it to support the crown.
Digital Design
We use a 3D digital scanner to capture the tooth and bite, then design the crown for a precise fit. You’ll leave with a temporary crown to protect the tooth in the meantime.
Final Placement
Once the crown is ready (about 2 weeks), we place and bond it carefully, then check the fit and bite to make sure it feels natural in daily use.
What to Expect
A Comfortable Visit
We make sure you are fully numb and comfortable during the preparation and placement process.
Natural-Looking Result
Metal-free crowns are designed to blend in with the surrounding teeth, without a dark line at the gumline.
Long-Term Durability
Modern ceramic materials are made to handle everyday chewing and can last for many years with good care.
ASK THE EXPERTS
Frequently Asked Questions
Are ceramic crowns as strong as metal?
Yes. Modern dental ceramics (like Zirconia and Lithium Disilicate) are incredibly tough. They are designed to withstand the heavy forces of chewing and grinding, making them suitable for both front and back teeth.
How do I care for my new crown?
Treat it just like a natural tooth. Brush twice a day, floss daily to keep the gums healthy around the base, and keep up with your regular exams. We will also check the crown and your bite during routine visits.
Why do you use digital scans?
Digital scans are not only more comfortable for you (no gagging on putty), but they are also far more accurate. A precise fit means the crown is sealed tightly against bacteria, preventing decay from creeping back in underneath.
