The Toothpillow® System
Gently Stop the Habit. Protect Their Growth.
If thumb sucking or pacifier use is sticking around past the newborn stage, there is a great risk of creating lifelong jaw deformities. What may seem like a harmless comfort habit can gradually shape how your child’s jaws grow, narrow the dental arches, and affect the way they breathe.
Children who rely on a pacifier beyond an appropriate age may already have underlying issues with jaw development. In many cases, the habit isn’t the true cause—it’s a compensation. A thorough screening to rule out a tongue tie, lip tie, or airway restriction and to assess your child’s overall jaw growth pattern is essential.
This is where Growth Guidance matters. The Toothpillow® system isn’t just about stopping a habit—it’s about starting healthy jaw development during the years when it matters most.
At The Airway Dentists, we use a gentle, non-shaming approach rooted in early growth guidance. By treating the root cause—often an airway or muscle-pattern issue—we help children break the habit while guiding their jaws to grow correctly.

Why “Just Stop” Doesn’t Always Work
Many families are told, “They’ll grow out of it,” or “Just remind them to stop.” But for many children, the habit isn’t simply behavioral—it’s physical.
Some children subconsciously suck their thumbs to pull the jaw forward and make breathing easier. Others use it to calm a nervous system that isn’t reaching deep, restorative sleep. If a child is struggling with nasal breathing at night, the habit can feel necessary.
Until we address the muscle pattern and airway, the habit often returns—especially during sleep or stress. The Toothpillow® system considers the whole picture, ensuring treatment is effective and stress-free.
What Is the Toothpillow®?
Unlike the “metal cages” used decades ago, the Toothpillow® is soft, removable, and child-friendly. Think of it as a pillow for your teeth.
Made of soft, medical-grade silicone, the Toothpillow® fits comfortably in your child’s mouth—similar to a mouthguard worn at night (plus 1–2 hours during the day). But it does far more than block a thumb.
The Toothpillow® system works by:
- Removing pressure: It gently reduces the inward pressure from cheeks and lips, allowing the dental arches to widen naturally.
- Guiding the tongue: It trains the tongue to rest on the roof of the mouth—its ideal position for healthy growth and stable nasal breathing.
- Supporting nasal breathing: Correct tongue posture helps shift children from mouth breathing to healthy nasal breathing, which supports deeper sleep and better overall development.
This is active early growth guidance—not just habit interruption.

Who Is the Toothpillow® System For?
The Toothpillow® system is ideal for children ages 3 to 12. This period is often referred to as the “Golden Window” for jaw development.
Between ages 3 and 12, the bones of the face are still growing and responsive. Early growth guidance during this window is far easier—and more effective—than trying to correct established patterns later.
Common signs to watch for:
- Thumb or finger sucking past age 3–4
- Pacifier use that is shifting the front teeth
- Mouth breathing in kids (lips open at rest or during sleep)
- Open bite (front teeth don’t touch when back teeth are closed)
- Tongue thrust when swallowing or speaking
- Restless sleep/bedwetting
- Snoring or noisy breathing at night
These signs don’t mean you’ve done anything wrong. They’re simply clues that your child’s muscles and airway may need support.
How the Toothpillow® System Works
Evaluation
We begin by asking why the habit exists. Is there a tongue tie? Is there airway obstruction? Is your child compensating for mouth breathing in kids at night?
We assess the teeth, jaws, tongue posture, and breathing patterns to understand the root cause.
The Fit
There are no messy impressions needed. The Toothpillow® is a pre-sized system selected based on your child’s measurements and growth stage.
It is custom-fitted from the available sizes to ensure comfort and effectiveness. Because it’s made from soft, medical-grade silicone, most children adjust quickly.
The Routine: Active Guidance
The routine is simple: wear the Toothpillow® while sleeping and for 1–2 hours during the day (homework time or tablet time works well).
But this isn’t passive. It’s active guidance. While your child sleeps, the Toothpillow® gently trains the muscles, guides the jaw forward, and reinforces proper tongue posture. Over time, these new patterns become natural.
Results
Many parents see the sucking habit stop quickly because the Toothpillow® physically breaks the seal that makes sucking satisfying.
We typically continue treatment for several months to ensure:
- Muscles are retrained
- Jaw growth is stable
- Permanent teeth have room to erupt properly
This is the power of early growth guidance during the Golden Window.

Benefits Beyond Breaking the Habit
The Toothpillow® system offers more than habit correction.
- Stops the habit: Gently interrupts the sucking urge without conflict or shame.
- Supports straighter teeth: Guides jaw development and creates space for adult teeth—often reducing the need for braces later.
- Improves sleep: Encourages nasal breathing, which supports deeper, more restorative sleep.
When children breathe better, everything works better.
What to Expect
Comfort
Soft & Removable
No pain or force. Since the appliance is removable, most children adjust to wearing it within a few days.
Timeline
Months, Not Years
While the habit often stops in weeks, we typically continue for 6–12 months to stabilize the growth.
Age Range
Start Early (3+)
We recommend starting as early as age 3. Correcting habits while bones are soft is much easier than fixing them later.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you take walk-ins?
We recommend evaluating habits as early as age 3. The earlier we address the habit, the less damage it does to the developing jaw and teeth.
Will it hurt?
No. Since the appliance is removable and soft, it does not force the teeth like braces. It simply guides them and removes pressure.
My child sucks their thumb at school. Do they wear this there?
Usually, no. The appliance is worn primarily at night while sleeping and for 1–2 hours during the day at home. This is often enough to break the habit.
