AIRWAY SUPPORT
Palate Expansion
Creating room for healthier breathing, growth, and alignment
When the mouth is too narrow, there may not be enough space for the teeth, tongue, and airway to function well together. Palate expansion helps create that room, supporting healthier growth, better tongue posture, and more stable alignment over time.
Upper and Lower Expansion
Why We Expand “The Box,” Not Just the Lid
Imagine a shoe box. If the lid gets wider but the box underneath stays narrow, the two will not fit together properly. The same thing can happen when only the upper jaw is expanded.
We look at both arches because the jaws need to develop in balance. That balance supports a healthier bite, more room for the tongue, and results that are easier to maintain over time.
- Better balance: When both arches fit together more naturally, the bite is more stable.
- More tongue space: A wider lower jaw gives the tongue more room to rest forward in the mouth.
- Stronger long-term support: Expanding only the upper arch can leave the underlying imbalance in place.
PALATE EXPANSION FOR CHILDREN
Guiding Growth When It Matters Most
In children, the jaws are still developing, which makes early expansion especially effective. Treatment can help create room for the teeth, tongue, and airway while growth is still happening.
Who is it for?
- Kids with cross-bites or narrow smiles
- Children who mouth breathe or snore
- Children with crowded baby teeth, which often predict crowded adult teeth
Placement
A custom-made device is bonded to the back teeth. It sits along the roof of the mouth and under the tongue.
Gentle Expansion
You’ll use a small key to turn the device at home. This applies gentle outward pressure.
The Result
Over several months, new bone fills in as the jaw widens, improving nasal breathing and creating room for adult teeth.
PALATE EXPANSION FOR ADULTS
Yes, You Can Expand Without Surgery
Adults were often told that expansion meant surgery or nothing at all. Today, selected patients may be able to expand with removable appliances designed to support gradual remodeling over time.
We use non-surgical, removable expanders that look similar to retainers but are designed to apply light, steady force over time.
Improves Sleep
Expanding the upper arch can increase the size of the nasal cavity, making it easier to breathe through the nose.
Restores Tongue Space
Creating more room in the mouth allows the tongue to rest in a healthier position and helps keep the airway more open at night.
Broader Smile
Expansion can create a fuller smile and reduce dark corridors at the corners of the mouth.
What to Expect
Palate expansion is a gradual process. Most patients adjust well, and we’ll walk you through what is normal as treatment progresses.
- Mild pressure is normal: Most patients feel a light pushing sensation, especially after adjustments. This usually fades quickly.
- A short adjustment period: You may notice a slight lisp or some difficulty swallowing at first as the tongue adapts to the appliance. Soft foods are often helpful during the first few days.
- Treatment takes time: Active expansion usually lasts a few months, but the appliance or a retainer is often worn longer so the new bone can harden and the result can stabilize.
ASK THE EXPERTS
Frequently Asked Questions
Can adults really expand their jaws?
Yes. Modern research and thousands of successful cases prove that adult jaws can respond to expansion therapy without surgery. We use specialized removable appliances designed specifically for mature bones.
Does the expander hurt?
It is generally not painful. You may feel pressure in the roof of the mouth or along the nose/cheeks when the device is active, but it is rarely described as pain.
Will this fix my sleep apnea?
Expansion addresses the anatomical cause of many sleep issues—a small airway. By widening the nasal floor and creating room for the tongue, we can significantly reduce airway resistance and improve sleep quality.
