Airway Orthodontics

Straight teeth are only part of the picture.

Crowding often happens because a child’s jaws didn’t grow wide or forward enough, leaving too little room for the teeth, tongue, and airway. When that space is limited, breathing and sleep can be affected.

What Is Airway Orthodontics?

Traditional orthodontics often treats crowding by moving teeth within a limited space—sometimes using extractions or retraction. Airway orthodontics focuses on why that space was limited in the first place.

Instead of pulling teeth back, we aim to expand the jaws forward and outward to create room for the tongue and airway. The goal is a stable foundation that supports breathing, sleep, and long-term health.

Form Follows Function.

At The Airway Dentists, we believe muscle drives bone growth. Jaws expand properly only if the muscles are working correctly.

  • The Root Cause: Crowding happens when the tongue sits low in the mouth and can’t rest on the roof of the mouth.
  • The Solution: Retraining the muscles, improving swallow patterns, and ensuring there are no restricted tissues (like tongue ties) make the expansion predictable and long-lasting.

Who Is Airway Orthodontics For?

Growing Kids

Common signs include crowded teeth, mouth breathing, or restless sleep. These patterns are often linked to sleep-disordered breathing. Early intervention can guide growth in a healthier direction before problems set in.

Adults & Teens

You may experience snoring, chronic fatigue, jaw tension, or have a history of extractions. While adult jaws don’t grow the same way as a child’s, bone can still remodel with the right approach to improve your airway.

How It Works

01

Evaluation

See The Whole Picture

We start with a full evaluation, including 3D CBCT scans to visualize your airway and jaw structures. Unlike flat X-rays, these scans help us measure space where it matters most: behind the teeth.

02

Expansion

Expansion & Function

We use custom expanders to widen the jaws and create space. Simultaneously, Myofunctional Therapy retrains your tongue and swallowing habits to ensure the muscles support this new growth.

03

Muscle Support

The Finish Line

Once the foundation is set and there is enough room for the tongue, we fine-tune the bite and tooth position with Invisalign®. Because the jaws are balanced, results are more stable.

Benefits of an Airway-Focused Approach

More than just a straight smile.

  • Better Breathing: Opens space for the tongue and airflow, improving sleep quality.
  • Facial Support: Encourages forward growth for better jaw balance and facial aesthetics.
  • Stability: Results are less likely to relapse because the muscles and bone are working together.
  • No Retraction: We avoid extractions or headgear whenever possible.

What to Expect

When the jaws, muscles, and airway work together, patients often feel the difference.

Timeline

Varies by Needs

Treatment typically involves an active expansion phase followed by Invisalign alignment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Many adults can achieve meaningful expansion and functional improvement without surgery.

The airway is highly dynamic. While we often see significant improvements in sleep quality and airway volume, we work with physicians to monitor your specific medical condition.

Traditional braces focus on moving teeth. Airway orthodontics focuses on jaw development first, then alignment.
